I nestled back into bed and fell right back into dreams. This time, it was one of my endless and episodic sagas, the kind that seems like it lasts all night without respite, broken down into unrelated scenes. In one, my mother, who gets around now with the assistance of walkers and wheelchairs, stacked dishes for me in an apartment I lived in five years ago. She could move around with ease and I felt a surge of relief just seeing it. In the next sequence, I was downstairs in the kitchen, the refrigerator open, spilling a wedge of light onto the night-grey tiles. I was using our butcher knife to cut into a sizeable hunk of flesh on the floor, and angrily shooing away an army of chickens as they edged near the bleeding thing. Rivulets of blood flowed along the spaces between tiles, and I was trying to contain the flood with an old washcloth. The eyes of the chickens showed white and they hissed as I swatted at them. They had human feet, shriveled and grotesque, with unkempt nails. Next, I was naked in a Lebanese restaurant. And so forth.

At 5 a.m., I woke. I looked at Julie. She was sleeping on her back, which is unusual for her. As I watched, her jaw dropped open and she belched an explosive burst of static. Her eyes opened and she turned to me.

“Did you just say something?”

Then she fell back asleep.
